Introduction

InBounds, a B2B and B2C startup offering comprehensive team management solutions for golf coaches at all levels, was acquired by Nunsys in April 2023. The platform streamlines training sessions, competition scheduling, travel coordination, and expense tracking. It also provides advanced tools for analyzing and visualizing player performance statistics and overall team strategy.

In this project, we revamped the user experience and improved the look and feel, marking one of the largest initiatives since InBounds' creation in 2019.

My role

I'm the producto designer of a producto trio team. I collaborated with product manager (Andrés) and developers (HéctorPablo) throughout this project.

The problem

The problem ✳

Since 2019, InBounds's app experience has not been changed. Here are the key problems with the core experience.

PROBLEM #1

Not defined user journey

An inconsistent and confusing user experience frustrates users, increasing the drop-off rate and reducing overall engagement.

Example
Multiple pathways exist for the same main actions, such as viewing player stats from three different locations.

Impact
Without a clear and intuitive journey, users get lost or frustrated, reducing their likelihood of using key features and resulting in lower conversion rates.

PROBLEM #2

Lack of detailed visual statistics and missing metrics

Coaches find it difficult to analyze player performance due to limited data details, missing key metrics, and lack of visual representations, leading to suboptimal decision-making.

Example
Coaches only see basic stats in tables and can't access critical metrics like shot patterns or performance under different conditions.

Impact
Without detailed visuals and key metrics, coaches struggle to derive insights quickly, reducing engagement and trust in the app.

PROBLEM #4

No responsive design

The app was not designed with responsiveness in mind, assuming coaches would primarily use laptops for reviewing stats and planning training sessions, but tablet usage is increasing rapidly.

Example
Key features like statistics review and training session creation are difficult to use on a tablet due to poorly scaled elements and an unoptimized layout.

Impact
A lack of responsive design leads to a frustrating experience on tablets, driving users away and decreasing engagement and adoption on popular devices.

PROBLEM #5

Lack of consistent branding and User experience

The app suffers from outdated design and inconsistent visual elements, resulting in a disjointed user experience and a weak brand perception.

Example
The messaging and visual style are inconsistent, with similar elements looking different across various pages, leading to user confusion and a lack of coherence in the app's design.

Impact
A product without a strong branding is just an app. The app fails to build trust and provides an inconsistent experience, increasing user frustration, technical debt, and reducing overall perceived quality.

PROBLEM #3

Training Sessions Don't Match Coaches' Workflow

The app’s current process for creating training sessions doesn’t align with how coaches typically plan their week, causing frustration and inefficiency.

Example
Coaches usually plan training for the entire week by assigning a type of training to each day. However, the app forces them to create sessions one day at a time, without the ability to plan an entire training calendar in advance.

Impact
This limitation makes it harder for coaches to efficiently organize and adjust their training plans, reducing engagement with the feature and lowering overall app adoption.

Defining the problem

How might we redesign a better experience for coaches to make it easier to manage their golf teams?

GOALS

Enhance Core Functionalities and User Satisfaction
Improve the key features—trainings and tournaments—to meet users' main needs, making them the central value of the app, while positioning other features as optional extras for tiered pricing.

Boost Operational Efficiency
Create a scalable design system with reusable components to reduce technical debt, speed up development, and ensure a consistent user experience across all devices.

Business goals

Users goals

Simplify User Journeys for Core Activities
Streamline navigation for key features—trainings and tournaments—so users can easily create sessions, manage tournaments, and view stats without unnecessary steps.

Improve Data Visualization and Insights
Provide coaches and players with advanced stats, key metrics, and visualizations to help them make informed decisions and optimize strategies.

Ensure a Consistent Experience Across Devices
Deliver a responsive design for all devices, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience across platforms, including tablets.

Our users

Our users ✳

Before designing, we analyzed user behavior data and conducted interviews to understand their needs and pain points. We also held shadowing sessions with coaches and players, attending golf training and tournaments to map workflows and spot friction points. This helped us identify the key jobs users rely on our product for, and define two user archetypes mapped to their jobs-to-be-done.

User Archetype: The Data-Driven Coach
An American college coach, tech-savvy, who values deep statistical analysis to optimize player performance and strategize for competitions.

Jobs-to-be-done
When I analyze my team's performance, I want access to comprehensive, detailed statistics and visual insights, so I can make data-driven decisions and provide targeted feedback to my players.

User Archetype: The Traditional Team Coach
A coach from a Spanish golf federation who trains teams of varying expertise levels, not very tech-savvy, and values simplicity and ease of use in tools.

Jobs-to-be-done
When I plan my team's training sessions, I want an easy-to-use app that allows me to schedule an entire week of training at once, rather than managing each day individually, so I can focus more on coaching and less on navigating complex processes.
